Rescue crews on Sunday launched a search for three elderly men who were reported missing in a body of water in California after they jumped in to try to help an 8-year-old child who was struggling in the water, officials said.
The men went missing near the Three Mile Slough Bridge in Sacramento County. Family at the scene told KCRA that a group of men and children had been camping overnight at Brannan Island State Recreation Area.

Five men jumped in to help the child, but three of them never made it back to shore.
“It happened so fast, three people, my friends … and we used to come here all the time,” Juan Cabrera told KCRA. According to the local station, the three men were identified by family as Edwin Rivas, Edwin Perez and Danilo Solorzano.

The Rio Vista Fire Department said in a social media post Sunday that the child was rescued and did not require medical attention.
Authorities said currents in the San Joaquin River Delta in Sacramento are extreme.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the mission switched from search to recovery Sunday night after officials were unable to locate the three missing men.

“Deputies searched the waterways with negative results,” said Sgt. Rod Grassman said, according to KCRA. “After exhausting all search efforts, deputies turned their attention to recovery.”
The Coast Guard was called in to assist in the recovery mission.
