At least one person was arrested and another injured after occupants of vehicles shot off fireworks at buildings and people for hours early Tuesday in a densely populated area of downtown Minneapolis.
A police officer was injured and a woman was arrested in connection with the chaos near 2nd Street and Portland Avenue, where there are multiple apartment buildings, according to a police report.
Also overnight, a similar incident took place about 3 miles to the northeast, where people aimed fireworks at buildings while street racers made donuts while spectators stood close enough to put their well-being at risk, according to a nearby resident who recorded some of the behavior.
Nearly half a day later, Minneapolis police leadership has yet to comment or release additional details about the chaos downtown or in the Northeast.
Officers responded in an effort “to clear the area of groups that had been on the scene for hours shooting fireworks at pedestrians, apartments, vehicles and businesses,” the report said.
“There were also reports of shots fired and violent crime,” the report continued, without offering details.
Police dispersed the people involved and sent a 23-year-old Savage woman to jail around 2:30 a.m., where she awaits charges on suspicion of assaulting an officer and obstructing police. The Star Tribune does not typically identify suspects before they are charged.
The officer who was attacked suffered “apparently minor injuries,” the report noted.
“It looked like 2nd Street facing Portland was ground zero,” said Star Tribune news editor Paul Clouda, who lives near where the years-long mayhem occurred and estimated it began around 10:30 p.m. hours on Monday.
