The female king is no joke in the first trailer

Sony’s upcoming historical action epic The Woman King from director Gina Prince-Bythewood tells the story of the all-female army that cemented the Kingdom of Dahomey’s status as a militaristic power player well into the early 20th century. Although the legacy of the actual Amazons of Dahomey has lived on in fantasy like Marvel’s Black Panther, The Woman King will make people understand why they became legends, judging by the film’s first trailer.

The Woman King tells the story of Naniska (Viola Davis), a general of the Amazons of King Gezo (John Boyega), and Naui (Tuso Mbedu), a young girl newly recruited into the kingdom’s famed army of female warriors. Like Black Panther’s Dora Milaje, the Amazons of Dahomey are skilled and deadly agents of the state, and the King Woman trailer highlights how Naniska and her fellow soldiers first learn of white foreigners intent on enslaving all of Africa. Although the aliens’ weapons pose a serious enough threat to make Gezo pause, fear is a foreign concept to Naniska, a woman willing to die for her king and country.

The Woman King also stars Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Adrienne Warren and Jamie Lawson. The film opens in theaters on September 16, 2022.
