DETROIT (WXYZ) — 7 Action News has learned that 19-year-old Ehmani Davis had a long prior history of arrests and charges before he was shot and killed after shooting and killing a police officer on Wednesday.
According to the police, the man died after the murder Detroit Police Officer Loren Courtshusband and father.
Davis has been in trouble with the law more than once, according to court records. In fact, we have learned that he is due in court as soon as Friday to face a charge of disorderly conduct.
Today we visited an address in Eastpoint where Ehmani allegedly lived and got into a verbal altercation with police. No one came to the door, but a neighbor recalled seeing previous problems with guns.
“I’ve seen bad behavior with the police back and forth at the residence,” the neighbor said.
7 Action News has learned that in early 2021, Davis was placed on 12 months of probation on a firearms possession charge in Eastpointe. In October 2020, he was charged with unlawful driving, and the Macomb County District Attorney’s Office was recently reviewing a warrant request for multiple charges in an alleged shooting into a crowd on July 9.
A 9mm Glock handgun was recovered at that incident.
The neighbor says it all comes down to a sense of shame in a system that ultimately could not prevent the officer’s death.
“When we have young kids in this area, just gun violence in general, I worry about the safety of my kids and the young adults that are on the block,” the neighbor said.
We reached out Thursday to an attorney appointed to represent Davis in his latest case. He offered his condolences to the Detroit Police Department and the Courts family, but said nothing more.
