“Sam Wilson is Captain America”

Chris Evans is not giving in to speculation about his potential return as Steve Rogers in Captain America 4.

Evans responded Saturday to a tweet from The Hollywood Reporter about “Captain America 4,” which read, “It’s unclear if Chris Evans will reprise his role as the first Captain America.” Evans’ response: “Sam Wilson is Captain America.”

Either Evans’ Twitter game is strong or he’s trolling. We tend to think the latter, because why would I spoil a huge surprise? When it was first reported in 2021 that he was in talks to return as the First Avenger, he reacted similarly, tweeting “news to me.”

Evans’ return is unlikely to be a new installment of Captain America, but rather a participation in an untitled Marvel project with an option for a second film.

When we last saw Captain America in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers returned to 1945 to live out his life in peace with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) before reappearing in the present as elder.

According to the time travel rules established by Avengers: Endgame, Captain America going back in time would create a different timeline and he would no longer be part of the movie universe. This means that in order to return to the present day “Endgame” timeline, he will have to use his time travel device.

With Cap appearing on the time travel platform as an old man, the “Endgame” scene can be played by the rules of the movie. But since he was just hanging out on a bench, the movie seemed to imply that he was just living his life and showed up at the right time. He certainly doesn’t appear to be wearing the time travel device in this scene.

Either way, if Steve Rogers has a future in the MCU, Evans isn’t saying on Twitter.
