The harassment of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh at a Washington, D.C., steakhouse could be just an appetizer for further incidents if a group of activists gets their way.
ShutDownDC is promising a $50 reward to anyone who provides a “verified sighting” of Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett or John Roberts in any public place in the DC area, increasing this to $200 if they stay that spot for half an hour.
Last month, the Court ruled 6-3 to uphold Mississippi’s abortion ban, which has been challenged, and 5-4 to overturn Roe v. Wade, a long-standing ruling that generally protected the freedom to choose to have an abortion.
Alito’s majority opinion was joined by conservative Justices Thomas, Gorsuch, Cavanaugh and Connie Barrett. Concurring opinions were delivered by Justices Thomas and Cavanaugh.
Since then, there have been protests outside the judges’ homes, with some public confrontations. The latest effort to offer premiums raises the stakes.
“DC service workers… If you see Cavanaugh, Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Connie Barrett or Roberts DM us with details!” said a Twitter post from ShutDownDC. “We’ll Venmo you $50 for a confirmed sighting and $200 if they’re still there 30 minutes after your message.”
