A man was rushed to hospital after his electric scooter collided with a vehicle in downtown Toronto

A man was rushed to hospital on Friday night with life-threatening injuries after his electric scooter collided with a vehicle in the city centre.

Toronto police tweeted that they were initially called to University Avenue and Elm Street, a block south of Gerrard Street West, for reports of a bicyclist “hit by a driver.”

Const. Alex Lee, a police spokesman, later told CBC News that several people called shortly after 6:30 p.m. to say a pedestrian had been hit.

But officers then found a man with injuries riding an e-scooter, Li said.

Paramedics took the man to hospital.

The driver stayed put.

Police say University Avenue is closed southbound to Gerrard Street West while they investigate.
