17 House Democrats were arrested at an abortion rights rally

Seventeen House Democrats were detained Tuesday at an abortion-rights rally protesting the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.

Leading the news: US Capitol Police say they have begun arresting demonstrators after they failed to comply with three warnings to stop blocking a street in Washington, D.C., near the Supreme Court.

  • The MPs are expected to be released and fined.
  • The USCP said they made “a total of 35 arrests for crowding, obstruction or failure to accommodate,” including the lawmakers.
  • Axios counted 17 members of Congress in the cordoned off area where Capitol Police were holding detainees.
  • Protesters sat down on First Street NE in front of the Capitol building and blocked the road.

The 17 deputies are:

  • Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.),
  • Rep. Carolyn Maloney (DN.Y.)
  • Congressman Cory Bush (D-Mo.)
  • Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.)
  • Rep. Madeline Dean (D-Pa.)
  • Rep. Nydia Velasquez (DN.Y.)
  • Representative Barbara Lee (D-Calif.)
  • Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.)
  • Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.)
  • Representative Sarah Jacobs (D-Calif.)
  • Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.)
  • Rep. Andy Levin (D-Mich.)
  • Representative Alma Adams (DN.C.)
  • Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman (DN.J.)
  • Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas)
  • Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota)
  • Rep. Jan Schakovski (D-Ill.)

What they say: “There is no democracy if women do not have control over their own bodies and decisions about their own health, including reproductive care,” Maloney said after he was arrested.

  • “Our country has never made big changes, not expanded rights, based on some senators and representatives having a wonderful conversation in the Capitol. This happens because of social movements. It’s happening because people are marching, people are protesting, people are organizing, people are getting arrested,” Levin said.
  • Asked if they were planning future action along these lines, Speier, who is leading the protest, said: “Stay tuned.”
