Backbone’s mobile gaming controller gets an official PlayStation release – TechCrunch

Backone One gets a new look.

This morning, Backbone (the company behind the Backbone One, a really damn good iPhone controller accessory) debuted a new variant of its device: the Backbone One PlayStation Edition.

The idea behind Backbone, for the uninitiated: pick up Backbone, slide your iPhone (or, soon, Android device) into its expanding grip, and bam—proper gaming on the go, buttons and all. Check out Matthew Panzarino’s review of Backbone One here.

Internally, this PlayStation edition is largely the same as the original Backbone One — it has the same switches, triggers, layout, etc. Externally, though, it’s been redesigned (in collaboration with the PlayStation design team) to look just right next to a PS5 or an official DualSense controller.

Here’s what else you need to know:

  • The company will sell both devices; the original Backbone One is not going away
  • This version of the controller identifies itself as a PlayStation controller to the operating system, allowing compatible mobile games to use the correct PlayStation glyphs (triangle, circle, etc.) instead of ABXY in their menus/tutorials/etc.
  • As with the original Backbone One, it will cost $100.
  • It will start shipping today

While it would be easy to write this off as “Oh, it’s Backbone One but white,” it’s a pretty big stamp of approval for a relatively young startup like Backbone to release a PlayStation edition of anything, all the way to the PS logo , hidden on the expanding back.
