Calgary police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident

A woman in her 20s has died after being hit by a car in northeast Calgary.

The accident happened early Thursday morning on Fourth Street NE between Bedfield Gate and Huntstrom Drive.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just before 2am to find the woman dead in the grass.

No one was transported to hospital.

Sergeant Steve Campbell says investigators believe the victim was traveling southbound on Fourth Street with another pedestrian when she was struck by a southbound vehicle.

The driver, a man in his 20s, remained at the scene and was arrested and released.

“He was arrested for dangerous driving,” Campbell said. “We are currently investigating speed and alcohol.

“We believe the pedestrian was traveling with another pedestrian at the time – possibly on a skateboard – coming from Beddington and traveling south on Fourth Street. We think they were just traveling along the curb of the street.

“There’s no sidewalk,” Campbell added. “The other person is very shaken.”

“Fortunately, this was not an accident where two pedestrians were hit. Fortunately, the other pedestrian was not injured.”

Campbell said police are investigating whether the two were skateboarding or walking with their skateboards.

“Our reconstruction unit is currently investigating the dynamics of what happened to the vehicle, what may have caused it to leave the road and re-enter the road,” Campbell said.

Calgary police closed a stretch of Fourth Street NE in both directions for their investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Calgary Police Service’s non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
