Several ServiceOntario employees have been accused of stealing hundreds of vehicles

Police say they have charged 28 people in Ontario and Saskatchewan, including several ServiceOntario employees, after investigating fraudulent modifications and the sale of hundreds of stolen vehicles.

Ontario Provincial Police say they launched an investigation in September 2020 after uncovering an alleged car theft ring that they say altered the identification numbers of stolen vehicles to sell them privately.

Police say the thefts mainly occurred in Ontario.

Through the investigation, dubbed Project MYRA, police say they recovered 214 vehicles valued at more than $12 million.

Police have identified three suspected auto theft criminal organizations and say they involved ServiceOntario employees accused of helping to illegitimately register stolen vehicles.

The OPP say 28 people have been charged with 242 offences.
