The build-up to AIDS 2022 was mired in controversy as many prominent experts and public health advocates were denied Canadian visas or the application process took too long to get to Canada in time for the conference.

During the press conference, public health experts will discuss how global health is being undermined by visa restrictions that prevent the free and valuable exchange of ideas, and more broadly by rich countries’ hoarding of vaccines and their reluctance to share vital biomedical know-how. how with developing countries. “With COVID-19 stealing the spotlight from many other pressing global public health issues, it is vital that we keep the focus on HIV/AIDS and other aspects of health equity that affect millions of people around the world,” said the Global Advocacy chief of AHF and Politics Terry Ford. “For example, this conference, which was supposed to bring together the most experienced and passionate HIV/AIDS activists representing countries with the highest burden of the disease, did not even make it into the country [Canada]. These advocates fight for our most vulnerable populations and the voiceless. The stark contrast of how people are treated in the Global North compared to the Global South is unacceptable and represents significant harm to the world’s ability to end the ‘other pandemic’ of HIV/AIDS.”

Other topics of discussion will include the inadequate global response to the worldwide outbreak of monkeypox, which was recently, albeit very belatedly, declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization. Advocates will also highlight the fact that HIV/AIDS is still a significant global public health crisis – responsible for 650,000 deaths each year worldwide – and requires a serious commitment from rich countries to successfully provide fast approaching Seventh Replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

According to UNAIDS, there were more than 38 million people living with HIV in 2021, including 1.5 million people who became infected with the virus recently. Since the start of the AIDS epidemic/pandemic, more than 40 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is a global not-for-profit organization providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to more than 1.5 million people in 45 countries worldwide in the US, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, Asia/Pacific and Europe. We are currently the largest non-profit provider of HIV/AIDS medical care in the world.
