Charges laid in Toronto harbor boat crash that killed two people

A Mississauga man is facing a dozen charges after a boating accident near Toronto’s harbor lands left two people dead in late May.

Just before midnight on May 31, police and paramedics were called to Tommy Thompson Park for reports of a boat that had overturned in Lake Ontario.

Police said the boat, which had 10 people on board, was traveling northeast toward the harbor when it collided with a breakwater on a rocky island.

The vessel capsized as a result of the accident. Out of 10 people, eight were pulled out of the water.

The other two passengers – a 34-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman – disappeared after the collision and a search was immediately launched.

Police said the two were later found dead in the boat when it was pulled from the lake.

On Friday, the police announced the arrest of 38-year-old Philip Gerkovski.

He is charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death, two counts of impaired operation causing death, four counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and four counts of impaired operation causing bodily harm.

Hrkovsky is scheduled to appear in court on October 4.
