Missing Alberta couple found safe in British Columbia

An Alberta couple who apparently disappeared while driving through northern British Columbia is safe and has been located, Mounties said.

Members of the Whitehorse RCMP alerted the public Thursday to the disappearance of Owen and Susan Konsky, saying all attempts to reach the couple since July 19 have been unsuccessful.

The family of the man and woman in their 60s became concerned for their safety and reported them missing.

At the time, police said they were known to be in Whitehorse on July 20 or 21. From there, the couple planned to travel south on the Alaska Highway through northern British Columbia

When a family member contacted police, officers patrolled the highway and followed up on other leads, but still couldn’t figure out where the couple and their fifth-wheel trailer had gone.

On Thursday night, a man identifying himself online as the couple’s son posted on social media that the Konskys were “alive and well” and that they had changed their route, which is why police couldn’t find them.

At the time, it appeared his parents still had no cell phone signal, so neither he nor the police spoke to them directly. As of Friday morning, they were still missing.

Police said they could not officially close the investigation until they were able to make direct contact with the missing persons.

But shortly before midday Mounties alerted the public that contact had been made with the adventurous pair and that they were safe.

Whitehorse RCMP thanked people in the territory, as well as in British Columbia and Alberta, for being on the lookout for the travelers.
