Drivers warned that delays on the Coquihalla Freeway could last for hours over the long weekend

Drivers heading to and from the Lower Mainland and the interior this August long weekend are being warned of major delays on the Coquihalla Highway.

Due to ongoing repairs to the main highway following last year’s rain storms, a travel advisory remains in effect between exit 183, Othello Road and exit 290, Merritt, for 115.9 kilometers.

Drive BC says heavy traffic is expected this weekend until August 1 and drivers can expect traffic jams and delays of more than two hours during peak travel times.

RCMP will enforce speed zones and drivers should watch for crews and signs.

The joint venture to repair the section is expected to begin in early August and be completed by the fall. The site is located approximately three kilometers north of the intersection of Highways 3 and 5.

About 460 meters of the southern lanes were swept away. They will be replaced, along with increasing culverts, widening curbs and rebuilding roadside barriers and spillways.
