Gun found while swimming

A Penticton man was shocked when he was swimming in Skaha Lake Thursday night and came across a gun on the sand underwater.
“I just went to the beach for a swim to cool off,” said Sean, whom Castanet agreed to use only by his first name for his protection.
He had headed to his usual spot between Penticton and Okanagan Falls to swim in the lake from a detour to a quieter area.
Then he found the firearm.
“I said, ‘Oh no,'” he said. “I mean, if you see a gun in the lake, that’s never a good thing.”
“It was just crazy. I was there every day this week. Not today, but every day this week and I didn’t notice it.”
Shawn said at first he thought it might be airsoft or a BB gun, but after picking it up he realized it was too heavy to be real.
“I know a little about firearms. So I looked at it and it had everything that worked like a real weapon.”
He noticed that the gun appeared to have been damaged by a hacksaw and was no longer operational.
Sean then called the police.
“I thought I should probably call him, it’s not dangerous at all. You can’t do anything with it. But I thought maybe they were looking for him.”
Shawn said the police confirmed to him that the gun was real.
He shared his findings on a local Facebook page to let the community know what he found.
Castanet has contacted the RCMP for more information and will update.
