Police are searching for a 26-year-old man who was last seen falling from his Seadoo in the Grand River Thursday evening, according to Ontario Provincial Police with the Brant County detachment.
Police said it happened near Highway 54 and Onondaga Townline Road around 7:20 p.m. The man’s water container was located, but police have not located the man.
“The search will continue until the person is located,” said Derek Rogers, OPP Regional Media Relations Coordinator.
Police converged on the area and began a ground search, locating the personal watercraft shortly after arriving.
He is described as tall with a thin build. The man was wearing gray shorts, no shirt or personal flotation device (PFD).
“There is no good reason not to wear a life jacket. This is unfortunate and happens far too often in our waterways in the western region,” Rogers said.
“The conditions on the Grand River are certainly rough and the visibility is poor, so it’s not going to help the search efforts,” Rogers said.
CTV News spoke with a man who says he was with the 26-year-old at the time of the accident and said his friend just wanted to test out his new Sea-Doo and fell when he stood up and turned.
There is an increased police presence in the area including OPP Aviation Services, OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU), members of Brant County OPP, Brant County Marine Unit, Haldimand County Marine Team, Emergency Response Team (ERT), Provincial Liaison Team (PLT ) and the Six Nations Police Service are involved in the search.
Police are concerned for the man’s safety and are asking anyone who finds him to contact them immediately at 1-888-310-1122.
