The Weather Network – Thunderstorms roll across the prairies, severe risk in Alberta

The heat set in on the prairies for most of July. The sweltering temperatures persist even after a fairly active month of weather trying to knock it down. To round out the month, another cold front will try to push through the heat, creating a risk of thunderstorms through Friday. To see what to expect from this system, read below.

A cold front moving in from the northern prairies combined with continued heat created a risk of thunderstorms on Friday. Central Saskatchewan may have isolated thunderstorms throughout the day. Scattered storms will also move into parts of Manitoba as the recent warm weather spreads across the province.

The greatest risk of storms will be in southern Alberta. The southern foothills may experience the most active weather later in the afternoon and evening with the risk of severe thunderstorms in the area. Large hail and strong wind gusts are possible as the system progresses.

The risk continues for Saturday on the prairies. In Alberta, isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the day in southern parts of the province. Southern Saskatchewan can expect much the same, although there is a chance the storms will strengthen in that location.
