Man shot by Vancouver police in downtown Eastside, IIO investigates

A Vancouver police officer and a suspect involved in a violent confrontation Saturday morning were sent to hospital after an alleged assault on the officer on patrol in the Downtown Eastside.

Around 8 a.m., an officer shot and killed a man who allegedly attacked him with a weapon while he was sitting in a patrol car, according to a police statement Saturday afternoon.

The officer suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital, police said.

The suspect, 53, is also in hospital with “non-life-threatening” gunshot wounds, where he remains in custody for the attack, police said.

Police said a second VPD member was later attacked by a bystander while assisting at the scene of the shooting, but was not seriously injured. The suspect in that incident has also been taken into custody.

VPD’s Major Crimes Unit and British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) are investigating. The IIO is the watchdog that reviews all police actions resulting in death or serious injury.

The confrontation took place at the intersection of Columbia and East Hastings streets in the downtown Eastside.

The IIO said in a statement Saturday afternoon that police officers saw a man brandishing a weapon as they drove through the neighborhood before the standoff. They are asking anyone with relevant information to contact them.
