Roofs became airborne and trees fell as a powerful storm triggered a possible tornado emergency in a northern Alberta village Friday night.
Cheryl Lyman, owner of the Hines Creek Hotel, said she had closed her bar and was heading home just outside the community when the storm pelted her truck with hail.
Then she got a phone call that the roof of her business had been ripped off, so she drove back to the village, but it took a while because there were so many downed trees and power lines.
Lyman says the two guests staying at the hotel are fine, but she says there is still no power in the village and surrounding area, and she is not the only one who has lost a roof.
Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Daniel Desjardins says tornado warnings have been issued for the area, but the weather agency is still calling it a “wind event” while it assesses whether there is evidence to confirm a twist has occurred.
Ed Walmsley of the Hines Creek Fire Department says despite the damage, no injuries were reported.
