New York declares public health emergency over monkeypox

New York Gov. Cathy Hochul has declared monkeypox a public health emergency as authorities seek to limit the spread of the virus.

The moves come as the number of cases in New York approaches 1,400, with most of the infections occurring in New York, the epicenter of the US outbreak.

“More than one in four cases of monkeypox in this country are in New York State, and we must use every tool in our arsenal as we respond,” Hochul said in a statement.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called for the JYNNEOS vaccine to be offered as a priority to all at-risk groups.

The WHO has also declared it a global health emergency

The World Health Organization declared the virus a global health emergency, the highest level of alert, last week.
