QE II hail damages vehicles, stalls drivers

Vehicles traveling on the Queen Elizabeth II Freeway on Monday night were hit by a massive storm that produced large hail, stranding some drivers.

According to RCMP, approximately 70 vehicles pulled over to the side of the highway near Innisfail, Alta., after being hit by hail the size of golf balls to tennis balls.

Officers began responding to reports of drivers stranded by hail damage after 6 p.m

Mounties began checking for injuries and transporting affected drivers. No injuries were reported at the time of publication.

According to the Prairie and Arctic Storm Prediction Center, “very unstable” atmospheric conditions across central Alberta throughout Monday fueled the development of severe storms – several of which prompted tornado warnings and emergency alerts.
