The British Columbia doctor shows up after the wife takes out an ad to find medical help for the husband

Janet Mort confirmed to Global News on Tuesday that a doctor had come forward and agreed to take her husband as a patient.

She was forced to place an ad in the Victoria Times Colonist newspaper in an attempt to find a doctor for her husband.

“We need a doctor’s help to renew my 82-year-old husband’s prescriptions. We will agree to any reasonable fee,” the ad said.

“Our wonderful family doctor retired at Christmas. There don’t seem to be any clinics available. Today, even Telus Health MyCare has not had virtual doctor appointments available for months,” he continues.

Mort is an Order of British Columbia recipient who has a PhD in Language and Literacy and who has been praised for his work helping children overcome reading difficulties.

She told Global News she tried everything she could think of to find a doctor for her husband of 51 years before taking out the ad in the paper.

Nearly one million British Columbians are currently without a family doctor, according to BC Family Doctors.

Although Mort can’t get an appointment with Telus Health, the company says it has appointments available.

“We are working hard to ensure there are enough doctor hours available,” the company wrote in a statement to Global News. “To meet this demand, we are releasing new appointments daily. We encourage people to check the app frequently for these newly released meeting times.”
