Young children in the VCH area can now be vaccinated

Vancouver Coastal Health vaccinates four-month-olds and older following Health Canada’s approval in mid-July.

Today, children between the ages of six months and four years have access to COVID-19 vaccines at 11 specialty clinics in the Vancouver Coastal Health, or VCH, region.

The region includes Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, North Shore, Vancouver, Richmond, Sunshine Coast, Powell River, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.

On August 2, VCH issued a news release stating that more than 45,000 children in its area are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

This development comes weeks after Health Canada approved the Moderna Spikevax vaccine against COVID-19 for use in children aged six months to five years. In mid-July, this vaccine was the first approved for children in this age group.

Parents and guardians can register their children in the Get Vaccinated system. Once appointments are available, they will receive a notification and can book a place, time and date for the time most convenient for them.

Most clinics have separate quiet spaces for children with special needs such as autism, sensory processing or needle phobia.

Older children aged five and over are still eligible for vaccination. Health officials say parents or guardians with multiple children will be accommodated for immunizations at VCH clinics.

Information and resources about vaccination against COVID-19, including guidance on how to prepare children for vaccination, can be found on the BCCDC website. VCH advises anyone with questions about childhood COVID-19 vaccinations to speak with their family doctor, nurse practitioners or call 8-1-1 for health guidance.
