Tornado warnings canceled for Waterloo Region and Wellington County, risk of severe weather remains

Tornado warnings have been canceled for Waterloo Region and Wellington County.

Guelph, Erin and southern Wellington County remain under a thunderstorm warning, while northern Wellington County and Waterloo Region are under a less severe thunderstorm watch.

Environment Canada says wind gusts could reach 90 km/h and “a tornado cannot be ruled out either.”

The National Meteorological Agency warns that rainfall of more than 50 mm is possible across the region.

Northern Wellington County could see up to 75mm in some areas.

Storms are expected to continue into the evening.

Environment Canada issues tornado warnings when impending or developing thunderstorms are likely to produce or produce tornadoes.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A TORNADO

  • If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, spinning debris near the ground, flying debris, or approaching threatening weather, take shelter immediately.
  • Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from exterior walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell, or interior closet.
  • Abandon mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers, and other temporary or freestanding shelters and move to a sturdy building if you can.
  • As a last resort, lie low and protect your head from flying debris. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
  • Remember, when it thunders, get indoors!
