Toronto Pearson Airport has officially launched the use of its new eGates for customs and immigration clearance at Terminal 1.
The airport began testing eGates technology in June in an effort to combat airport delays.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said eGates give international travelers arriving at Terminal 1 “another option to submit their customs and immigration declaration, whether the declaration is made using the CBSA pre-declaration feature in ArriveCAN or directly on the device.”
CBSA said eGates are the same type of system as electronic kiosks (primary inspection kiosks or PIKs). He said that different regulatory requirements between eGates and PIK are not necessary.

The only difference is that kiosks can process groups of passengers of a maximum of five, while eGates process passengers one at a time. All 12 eGates are separated by dedicated eGate lanes.
Those aged 16 and over will be able to use eGates to verify their identity and submit their details for customs and immigration declaration.

Travelers who have completed their CBSA pre-declaration via ArriveCAN will be able to review, edit, certify and submit it in eGate.
The airport said it plans to expand the eGates technology to Terminal 3 within a year.
