YRP officer facing disability charges for alleged off-duty incident

A York Regional Police officer is facing charges following an alleged impaired driving incident that occurred while off duty last weekend.

In a news release issued Monday, York Regional Police said the South Simcoe Police Department received a call from a citizen about an impaired driver who was northbound on Yonge Street from the Town of Bradford West Grillimbury around 9 p.m. on August 13.

South Simcoe Police arrested a 43-year-old suspect as a result of the investigation.

Police said Monday that Amanda Knegje was charged with dangerous operation, operating while impaired and operating while impaired-excessive blood alcohol.

Knegje has been a member of the York Regional Police Service since 2020. She is currently assigned to patrol in uniform and is suspended with pay.

In a statement, YRP Chief Jim McSween said the alleged incident was “very concerning given the work York Regional Police do to tackle impaired driving”.

“We continue to remind our members of their responsibility to live up to the values ​​of our organization, both on and off duty,” McSween said.

He added that the force was “committed to transparency”.

The charges have not been proven in court.
