No. 5 Michigan dominated No. 10 Penn State for one quarter, but the stat sheet disparity isn’t showing on the scoreboard — yet. The Wolverines only led 6-0 after several long punts were blocked in the red zone, forcing them to settle for a field goal.
Still, if you look at the box score, it’s been a massacre so far. Michigan’s offense had 126 yards, while Penn State had less than 10 yards. The Wolverines’ defense forced a three-and-out on both Penn State possessions and held the Nittany Lions to just three yards rushing. Michigan star running back Blake Corum has 41 yards on the ground, while quarterback JJ McCarthy has completed 8 of 11 passes for 74 yards.
The second quarter would begin with a Penn State strike and a chance for Michigan to extend its lead. Is Michigan still Ohio State’s only competition in the Big Ten East or is Penn State bouncing back from two mediocre seasons? We have 45 minutes left to find out.
