The latest in a series of strong mid-autumn storms is bringing wind, rain and snow to large parts of British Columbia.

Snow or rain warnings have been issued for most of southern British Columbia, the central interior, the Prince George and Peace River regions,

Environment Canada says showers over the inner south coast, including eastern Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and Metro Vancouver will see between 30 and 70 millimeters of rain.

But it says chilly conditions could mean rain falls as sleet at slightly higher elevations in Metro Vancouver before conditions warm up on Friday.

Environment Canada warns that snow is guaranteed for regions east and north of Hope, especially over mountain passes, as snowfall warnings call for 15 to 25 centimeters over southern British Columbia through Saturday.

Up to 30 centimeters of snow is forecast for the Caribou Mountains, while the weather service says strong, gusty winds could reduce visibility in the blowing snow in the central interior and northeast before the storm tapers off by Friday.

Extreme weather shelters were opened in Vancouver and Surrey as the latest storm combined with near-freezing temperatures.

A social media post from the City of Vancouver said additional shelter locations were open at five facilities as rain, wind and potential snow made temperatures feel like or below freezing.

Surrey also added additional beds at five facilities, and both Surrey and Vancouver say the additional beds will remain open until at least Monday.
