cy London will thaw quickly, with forecasters predicting a return to unseasonably warm weather of 13C next week.

The news will come as some relief to Londoners watching their gas and electricity bills soar after turning on their heating during the snow front, which will see temperatures drop to -4C on Wednesday night.

It will mark the end of the snow that blanketed London on Sunday night, bringing both joy to Londoners and chaos to the capital’s transport networks.

Paul Gundersen, the Met Office’s chief forecaster, told The Daily Star: “Over the last week the UK has been caught in a northerly airstream bringing cold, sometimes arctic air into the UK.

“We continue to have this northerly influence on our weather patterns until the weekend, but then the cold conditions will lose their extreme dominance over the UK weather patterns and we will move into a regime where relatively mild and relatively cold conditions will battle for supremacy.”

“We can expect changeable conditions with colder and milder air not too far off our coasts, but it looks like the Atlantic Ocean has ‘awakened’ compared to recent days and will have a stronger influence, counteracting any more -further bouts of extreme cold, although spells of wintry weather remain possible for the rest of December.”

Met Office spokesperson Nicola Maxey told the Daily Express: “The weather will remain cold this week, with daytime temperatures not getting much above freezing for many and a continuing risk of fog and ice.

“The cold weather will continue into next weekend, but there are indications that we will see temperatures rise over the coming week with a return to milder weather from then.”

Despite some rain expected, temperatures next week will reach a maximum of 13C later on Monday.

The BBC also played down hopes of a white Christmas this year, predicting cloudy skies and high temperatures of 8C.
