Karim Benzema was given special permission to appear at the World Cup final

Imagine if they got there and lost

Karim Benzema has been cleared by Real Madrid to join France’s squad for the World Cup finals – if he can make it through.

Benzema was initially forced out of Didier Deschamps’ 26-man squad due to injury, but after returning to training with Real Madrid last weekend, has been deemed fit enough to return and play a role.

Mundo Deportivo claim the 34-year-old will fly to Qatar if France beat Morocco on Wednesday night, where they will then face Argentina in the final.

His arrival means he will be eligible for a winner’s or runner-up medal, depending on the outcome of the result.

Olivier Giroud led the line perfectly in Benzema’s absence and even became the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, replacing Thierry Henry.

Giroud is in the hunt to win the Golden Boot in Qatar and has four goals to his name, the latest of which came in the 2-1 quarter-final win against England.

Along with Giroud is Kylian Mbappe, who is level with Lionel Messi with five goals in the Golden Boot race, who has lit up the stage in Qatar with his performances.

France are looking to win back-to-back World Cups after their victory in Russia 2018. They beat Croatia 4-2 in the final in Moscow and will be hoping for a repeat result if they go to the final at Stade Lusail on Sunday.

The win will also coincide with the French boss celebrating his 10th year in charge of the national team.
