News from Timmins: College basketball player identified as murder victim

Timmins police have now identified the homicide victim in last month’s homicide at an apartment on Mountjoy Street South.

The body of Keith Dufney-Tennant, 22, of the Toronto area, was found the morning of Dec. 18, the Timmins Police Service said in a news release Thursday.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“Foul play has been determined and is currently being investigated as a homicide,” police said.

Dufney-Tennant played basketball for Durham College as No. 33, and the Lord’s men’s team is mourning the loss of the six-foot-tall sophomore guard.

“The team will wear a special #33 black patch on their uniforms in the new year in honor of Keith,” the team said in a Dec. 27 news release.

“In times of loss, it is especially important to know that we are here to help. Grievance support services are available to assist student-athletes and coaches during this difficult time. We are here for you. Our collective thoughts and prayers go out to Keith and all of his family, friends and loved ones at this time.”

“Words cannot describe this tragic loss of such a wonderful young man. Take comfort in the fact that so many people care,” said Ken Babcock, the college’s director of athletics, on a tribute wall.

“I know we are always strong together as one big family in the world of sports and that rings true today.” On behalf of Durham College, Lords Nation and the OCAA, please accept our sincere collective thoughts and prayers for Keeth and all of his family, friends and loved ones at this time.”

“Keith and I worked at Seeds of Hope camp together for two consecutive summers. There was never a dull moment when Keith was in the room. He always brought a smile to your face and told jokes to cheer you up. He was hilarious and so down to earth. You deserved the world. Keats, you will be missed. Love always,” Alice Osei wrote in a tribute.

“Words cannot describe this feeling, you were taken from us so soon. You could light up a room with your laugh. I remember sitting in class with you and listening to your jokes every day. You also loved to talk about basketball and what you wanted for (your) future. You were always so kind and loving. You will not be forgotten. We miss you so much. You will always be in our hearts #33,” a person with the initials GG posted on the memorial.
