Samsung Display unveils a new RGB OLED panel with 2000 nits

Samsung’s top-rated Sony A95K and S95B TVs from last year featured Samsung Display’s 2022 RGB OLED panel, which was one of the display products of the year. This year’s version, announced at CES 2023, will be significantly brighter, smarter and more energy efficient.

Samsung Display says the improvements are due to an advanced optimization algorithm called IntelliSense AI and a new OLED HyperEfficient EL material, resulting in a maximum peak brightness of more than 2,000 nits, about twice the nits in last year’s panel.

This is the actual 77-inch version of the Samsung Display 2023 OLED panel.

The new OLED HyperEfficient EL material produces blue light. Samsung’s display panels use a layer of quantum dots to provide red and green, hence the acronym QD-OLED. If you’re not familiar, quantum dots are re-emitters that produce very pure colors in strict accordance with their size. They can produce these colors using any shorter wavelength light source (blue is shorter than green or red).

You’ve probably also noticed the acronym “RGB,” which stands for the three red, green, and blue subpixels used by these panels to form each pixel. Samsung’s display omits the fourth white subpixel used by LG in its OLEDs, resulting in truer color in lights and an overall brighter picture. However, the whites are not as true as those produced by the LG sets.

Samsung Display also claims that the new machine learning algorithm and OLED material combine for up to 25% reduction in power consumption.

Looking forward to a TV with one of these new Samsung displays. Check back in a few months for a review.
