Flights were canceled Friday between Mazatlán and Vancouver as civil unrest in Mexico’s Sinaloa state continues.
WestJet confirmed to Global News that flights WS2042 (Vancouver to Mazatlan) and WS2043 (Mazatlan to Vancouver) have been cancelled.
“As the situation continues to evolve, we will make operational changes in the name of safety if necessary.” We advise all guests currently in the region to follow all response instructions provided by local authorities,” WestJet said in a statement.

Sunwing initially delayed one flight to Mazatlan on Friday and eventually canceled it.

Many British Columbians remained in Mazatlan on Friday, unsure when they would be able to return home.
Violence erupted in the state on Thursday after police arrested suspected drug cartel leader Ovidio Guzman, son of jailed Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Much of the violence appeared to be concentrated in the city of Culiacan, where the airline Aeromexico said one of its passenger planes was hit by a bullet during the fighting.
However, three airports, including the one in Mazatlán, were closed and Canada issued a travel warning for the entire state.
