Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a fatal two-car crash near Coombs

One person was killed and another was sent to the hospital in a fatal two-vehicle crash in Qualicum Beach that police believe was alcohol-related.

On Jan. 6 at about 5:50 p.m., Oceanside RCMP were called to Highway 4 near Coombs after the driver of a pickup truck crossed the center line and collided with a smaller car, says Cpl. Travis Strong.

Police, along with paramedics and crews from Qualicum Beach Fire Rescue, arrived at the scene where the driver and sole occupant of the car were pronounced dead, Strong told CHEK News.

He said there were two passengers in the truck, including a passenger who was uninjured and the driver, who was sent to hospital with minor injuries.

After 6:00 p.m., DriveBC tweeted that the highway was fully closed between Highway 4A and Hilliers Road South, with a detour via Hilliers Road. Hours later, shortly before 2 a.m., the service said the highway had reopened.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, according to Strong, who noted that the British Columbia Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation.
