The British Columbia Integrated Homicide Team and the RCMP Mission have arrested and charged a man in connection with a December murder.

Police were called Dec. 14 around 7 a.m. to a report of a stabbing in the 33800 block of 4th Avenue in Mission, near Mary Street.

Upon arrival, officers said they found a man with stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of first responders, the victim unfortunately died at the scene.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over the investigation and continued to work closely with the Mission RCMP, the BC Coroners Service and the RCMP’s Integrated Forensic Identification Unit (IFIS).

The victim has been identified as 64-year-old Holbert Tew, a resident of the home where the killing occurred.

According to IHIT, investigators worked quickly and soon identified a 27-year-old man, Matthew Bauer of Chilliwack, as the suspect.

On Friday, IHIT investigators, supported by the Mission RCMP and the Upper Fraser Valley Regional RCMP, located and safely arrested Bauer.

The British Columbia Prosecutor’s Office (BCPS) has charged Bauer with second-degree murder in connection with Tew’s slaying on Saturday.

“IHIT is extremely grateful for the dedication of our partners in every squad, municipal police agency, as well as the support of all integrated teams,” Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of IHIT said in a press release. “Investigators continue to work to determine a motive.”

As this matter is now before the courts, IHIT said no further information will be released at this time.
