Police are investigating a sudden death in Campbellton following a home invasion, arson

Police are continuing to investigate a sudden death and related incidents in Campbellton early yesterday morning.

Around 2:30 a.m., police were called to a home invasion on Route 340 in the city and a nearby one-vehicle crash that occurred prior to the invasion.

Officers determined that a man knocked on the door of the home, then forced his way inside and assaulted the resident who answered the door. The victim ran from the home for help, but returned to find the upstairs of the home and their vehicle in the driveway on fire.

Firefighters extinguished both fires and found a man dead in an upstairs room. He was not a resident of the home.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been engaged and the serious crime investigation is ongoing.

Residents can expect an increased police presence in the area over the next few days, but there is no risk to public safety.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP Major Crimes Unit West (at 709-637-4420) or Crime Stoppers (at 1-800-222-8477).
