A police crackdown on theft and “social disorder” at Kelowna’s Capri Center Mall this week resulted in six arrests.

RCMP say in a news release that officers from the Department of Public Safety visited the mall on Jan. 11 after an increase in thefts and other incidents reported to police. Officers also targeted repeat offenders with the operation.

Uniformed and civilian troopers took just 45 minutes to catch their first thief. A total of six people were arrested over the next few hours and charges are pending. He was captured and wanted on several warrants.

“The audacity of some of these thefts has become alarming, including one man who grabbed about fifty dollars worth of merchandise, made no effort to cover it up and then just walked out,” said Const. Mike Gauthier of the Department of Public Safety. “Fortunately he was spotted and immediately apprehended.”

“Expect more,” said Sgt. Scott Powry of CSU.

“We have further projects coming up where we will be working with our local retail loss prevention officers across the city to focus on catching repeat offenders and violent offenders.”
