Former GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan does not believe Congressman George Santos of New York will be able to retain his seat in the House of Representatives.
Before the midterm elections, The North Shore Leader published a story questioning the source of Santos’ income and properties. And before he was sworn in to Congress last week, The New York Times published a report revealing that he fabricated much of his resume. Reports continued to trickle in, revealing that he had been dishonest about his life experiences, background and more.
The revelations led to calls for his resignation.
Ryan, who decided not to seek re-election in 2018 after serving as House speaker, was asked about Santos by CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday.
“Congressman George Santos, he obviously lied about everything on his resume,” Tapper told Ryan Kapping after a 12-minute interview. “At least six House Republicans have said he should resign, including five New York Republicans. Do you agree?”
“Sure, I agree,” Ryan replied. “My guess is they’ll probably let the ethics committee do its job.”
Reps. Daniel Goldman and Richie Torres of New York filed a formal complaint with the House Ethics Committee asking for an investigation into Santos, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
“This is a fraudulent application. This is not a decorated application, this is a fraudulent application,” Ryan added. “He deceived his constituents. So of course he has to step down.”
Santos has been the subject of campaign finance complaints and is under investigation by New York prosecutors. He is also under investigation in Brazil for allegedly using stolen checks. Still, Santos has repeatedly made it clear he has no interest in stepping down.
“But he doesn’t strike me as an honorable man. I don’t know him,” Ryan said before the interview ended. “I can’t imagine the guy will be around much longer.”
Santos did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
