Toronto hasn’t had a sunny day in over 3 weeks, but that’s about to change – Toronto

Toronto has been experiencing an unusual lack of sunshine lately and hasn’t had a mostly sunny day in over three weeks.

Global News meteorologist Anthony Farnell said the city typically sees about 3.4 hours of sunshine per day in January when averaged, but so far this month it hasn’t even seen a total of 3.4 hours of sunshine.

But there is some good news, he said, with a sunny weekend ahead, although even that won’t last.

“Normally November and December are the cloudiest months of the year and it starts to get sunnier in January, mostly because of the big arctic high pressure systems that bring cold air, but also sinking air and clear skies,” Farnell said .

“This month has been dominated by air coming mostly from the south and from the Pacific, which means the clouds are closed in like it’s November or December. Temperatures are also more typical for these months.”

Another reason for the extensive cloud cover is the higher than normal rainfall totals that have been seen since early December, with the high amount of moisture in the ground causing the clouds above to increase.

There was some sunshine on Christmas Day, but the last mostly sunny day was Dec. 21, Farnell said.

This weekend is expected to be “very sunny,” Farnell noted, but the weather picture “doesn’t really change until the end of this month, so expect more cloud than sun until that happens.”
