A petition posted Sunday on Change.org against a story time event in Kelowna has been removed from the platform.
Kelowna resident Lori Baird started the petition, calling drag events inappropriate for children.
In an email to Castanet, Change.org senior content specialist Caleb McRae said Tuesday that “the petition has been taken down as a violation of Change.org’s community guidelines.”
According to community guidelines listed on Change.org, the platform says that petitions should not include any type of hate speech, misinformation, disinformation, as well as abuse and harassment.
Baird, who did not respond to Castanet’s request for comment, told the Western Standard that the petition was removed because it was identified by the platform as hate speech.
The library’s Community Reader Story Timeline allows any member of the community to apply to be a reader.
“So the drag queen reading this story is a volunteer — there’s no cost to the library system and she just wants to provide a little entertainment,” Cone explained. Loyal Wooldridge.
The Okanagan Regional Library says the all-ages drag story time event is meant to be a “reset” after a 2019 controversy over the library hosting such an event.
The Slide Story Time event will be held at the Kelowna Downtown Library on January 28th.
A petition in support of Drag Story time now has nearly 2,000 signatures.
