Prince Albert police chief responds to officer-involved shooting, man dead

The incident marks the city’s fourth police-involved shooting. The most recent was in 2013, when police shot and killed Ryan Natomagan, who was in possession of a knife.

One of the questions posed to Bergen on Tuesday afternoon was related to the status of the busybody. Bergen responded that it was too early in the investigation to look into that.

“The most important, highest priority is to ensure that members who have information that will assist the investigation are made available to the investigation,” he said.

Bergen noted that within 15 minutes of the shooting, he was notified and immediately contacted SIRT. He also explained that he had been at the police station since 2am to provide support to members and an entire support team had been brought in to respond to other calls made during the night.

Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team is an independent, civilian-led team that investigates cases where serious injury or death may have occurred while someone was in police custody or as a result of the actions of a police officer.

According to a statement provided to paNOWadditional details will be provided as the investigation permits, and a public report will be made after the investigation is complete.

“It’s been a long shift for the whole organization and it will be for the next few days, but we’re seeing members reaching out and supporting each other and knowing how important it is to be here to take care of each other,” Bergen said.
