Freezing rain warning in effect for GTA, much of southern Ontario

Those commuting around the city this morning are being told to prepare for a slippery commute.

A freezing rain warning is in effect for the Greater Toronto Area and much of southern Ontario.

“Freezing rain, possibly mixed with ice pellets and snow, is expected to begin this morning,” Environment Canada said in its warning Thursday.

Slippery conditions are expected to make movement for vehicles and pedestrians more difficult, and people are advised to take extra care and allow extra time.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, paths and parking lots can become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas,” the warning reads. “There could be a significant impact on peak-hour traffic in urban areas.”

School buses have been canceled in a number of areas around the GTA due to the freezing rain.

In a statement, Metrolinx said it would “do everything we can” to keep customers safe, but advised commuters to allow extra time

“The weather can change quickly, so give yourself extra time and remember that the best commute is a safe one,” the agency said in an email to CP24.

They advised people to try to park in a place sheltered from the rain if possible and to check their page for service updates.

Environment Canada said areas closer to the lake may not get freezing rain because temperatures near Lake Ontario are more likely to stay above freezing throughout the day.

The temperature was just above freezing at 1 C early Thursday. High temperatures of 3°C are expected in Toronto today.

Freezing rain will change to rain or sleet this afternoon as temperatures rise above freezing.

Fog is also expected to form in the afternoon.

Rain or flurries are expected to continue overnight, with a risk of freezing rain early Friday.
