A man who drove a stolen truck to the Royal Inland Hospital and then fell asleep in the emergency room waiting room has been sentenced to spend seven months in prison.
Ryan Dalton Beeson, 33, pleaded guilty in Kamloops provincial court Thursday to four charges — one count each of breaking and entering and possession of stolen property over $5,000, and two counts of trespassing.
The court heard that Beeson broke into a Kal-Tire site in Surrey on November 10 and stole a pick-up truck. He drove the vehicle to Kamloops and parked outside the RIH emergency room.
“There is CCTV that shows this vehicle pulls up with Mr Beeson driving and he goes into the triage room and sits down,” Crown prosecutor Evan Goulet told the court.
“The police were notified and they turned up to find Mr Beeson asleep in the waiting room wearing a Kal-Tire jacket.”
The jacket was also stolen.
“Mr. Beeson told police he broke into the building because he was cold and wanted to be arrested,” Goulet said.
“He said he slept in the office for a while and then stole the truck.”
Beeson also admitted to possessing a stolen truck in Chilliwack and violating the terms of his probation in Prince George.
Defense attorney James Ross said Beeson is from the North Thompson area and has struggled with drug addiction. The court heard he had been sober about three years ago but had been in and out of prison in recent years.
Kamloops Provincial Court Judge Stella Frame sentenced Beason to just over seven months in jail. After credit for time served, he will have 95 days left on his sentence.
Beason will be on probation for 12 months after being released from prison with a condition barring him from going to the Cal-Tyre he broke into in Surrey. He will also be prohibited from using drugs and possessing burglary tools.
Frame also ordered Beeson to submit a sample of his DNA to a national criminal database.
