MHA is frustrated by the eviction of an elderly woman from a city flat

An elderly St. John’s woman will be evicted from her city-owned apartment building today and her MHA is disappointed by the actions of her landlord, the City of St. John’s.

Shirley Cox, who is 82 and uses a wheelchair, was evicted without good reason, according to supporters. She was given 3 months notice to leave, but NDP Leader Jim Dean says the notice was not accompanied by an explanation.

A new date of Jan. 31 has been selected, which the city says was decided between Cox and what the city describes as “community partners.” The city was not involved in choosing that date, and they note that they will not evict the woman during the winter months or until housing is found. Dean, however, says Cox doesn’t want to be kicked out.

He has been working on the case since last fall, but says the city is being unreasonable.

He says they helped Cox appeal and asked if the city was interested in mediation so they could resolve the issue without her having to be placed in a shelter, but got nowhere.
