A Tulsa County jury has sentenced David Weir to death for the murder of Tulsa Police Sergeant Craig Johnson. The jury debated for three hours. When they returned with death, Ware did not show much emotion in the courtroom. He looked straight down.
District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said he was proud of the 12 jurors for their attention and endurance of the horrific things they had to watch and hear during the trial. He said the jury had done justice to Craig Johnson’s family, Tulsa police and the Tulsa community.
Just before the jury began deliberating, prosecutors told the jury: “Today we are talking about accountability. This is not the first time David Ware has raped the police, but it should be the last. “Prosecutors apologized to the jury for the graphic videos they had to watch and the things they had to hear during the trial. these are things they can carry with them for a very long time.
Prosecutors say Ware didn’t just shoot the cops, he shot them both in the head, then fled and left them to die.
After the verdict, Sergeant Johnson’s wife said in a statement: “I want to thank the jury for all their time and attention. I know they had to see a lot of difficult things that I imagine he will be with them for a long time. I pray that they will be able to recover from the experience, thanks to the prosecutor’s office for all their hard work. My request at this time is for the silent majority I have seen and heard to start talking and change the established anti-police culture. “
Tulsa Police Chief Wendall Franklin said: “I think every man and woman in uniform, whether it’s a TPD patch or some other patch, I think that says a lot about this piece of fabric we’re wearing. It resonates with all of us that we have someone or something bigger than us in the background who supports us. “Chief Franklin also praised Sergeant Johnson’s family for their strength in this tragedy. David Ware was convicted of killing a sergeant. Craig Johnson last week and now faces the death penalty. Two jurors were removed at their own request on Wednesday, just before closing speeches began. The judge agreed to call the jurors. The jury made the final decision after three hours of deliberation.
