Police find a sculpture stolen from BC Children’s Hospital

Vancouver police have found a bronze sculpture worth more than $ 45,000 that was stolen from BC Children’s Hospital earlier this month.

According to a police press release, investigators tracked the artwork to East Vancouver and retrieved it on Thursday afternoon.

The 90-kilogram piece, part of the “Codes” series, handmade by Artist Marie Huri, based in BCwas stolen on April 3 just before 4 a.m. PT, according to police.

According to hospital officials, security footage that night showed a man removing the statue from its pedestal before taking it to a wheelchair.

Just days before it was taken, the sculpture was installed in front of one of the entrances to Oak Street Hospital as part of a shelter for patients and their families. Flowers were to be planted around the base of the pedestal.

Malcolm Berry, president and CEO of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, said it was “fantastic news” to learn that the sculpture had been found.

“Works of art like this work, carefully created by world-famous[ed] artist Marie Houri, is an important aspect of the hospital’s treatment environment. “We are really grateful for the support of the Vancouver Police Department to restore this important part of the job,” Berry said in a written statement.

No one has been arrested in connection with the theft, but police say the investigation is still ongoing and officers are gathering evidence.
