The RCMP has released some sobering and shocking statistics about the spike in fatal collisions in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The number of collisions in the RCMP’s jurisdiction between April 1 and June 30 this year more than doubled compared to the same period the previous year, and the number of fatalities tripled.
The RCMP responded to a total of 12 incidents resulting in the loss of 16 lives during that three-month period. Five people died in collisions during the same period in 2021.
Police say contributing factors to the fatal crashes include impaired driving, aggressive driving and distracted driving, as well as not wearing a seat belt and wearing a helmet.
RCMP warn that single-vehicle and multi-vehicle crashes, mostly crossing the center line, happen across the province, at all times of the day and involve all ages.
