WhatsApp details upcoming community features and other major updates

TL; DR

  • WhatsApp described in detail its new community feature that comes in the app.
  • The company also announced a bunch of other features, including the ability to share larger files, emoji reactions and more.

WhatsApp has officially recognized several upcoming features. The company wrote a blog post detailing all the new features coming to the chat app, including the communities feature, perhaps one of the biggest additions to the platform in years.

According to WhatsApp, the communities will cover a collection of separate groups. They will allow organizations such as schools, local clubs and non-profit organizations to be under one umbrella and do things more efficiently.

“People can receive updates sent to the whole community and easily organize smaller discussion groups about what matters to them,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Community administrators will receive powerful tools to control which groups can be included. They will also be able to broadcast announcements to everyone in the community.

In addition, WhatsApp assures that community chats will be encrypted from end to end.

There is no specific date when the communities will get on the platform, but now should not be long.

Meanwhile, more immediate updates targeting WhatsApp include things we’ve heard about in the last few days.

You will soon be able to respond to messages with emoji. Group administrators will be able to remove wrong messages from everyone’s chats. The file sharing limit will be increased to 2GB. Finally, one-touch voice calls will now allow up to 32 people to talk to each other.

Once again, there is also no word on when all these new features will go into WhatsApp. We will update this article when we have more details.
