St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado and pitcher Genesis Cabrera have been punished by Major League Baseball for their roles in beating the benches in their 10-5 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday at Bush Stadium.
Arenado received penalties for two games for “contributing to the escalation of the incident”, the league said on Thursday, while Cabrera received a penalty for one match. Both were fined an unknown amount.
Arenado appealed his removal and began Thursday night against Arizona Diamondbacks. Cabrera will serve his sentence on Thursday.
Cabrera hit Mets striker JD Davis from the top of the eighth inning, the Mets’ 19th major league hit of the season. That came a day after St. Louis hit three Mets with pitches on Tuesday night.
New York seemed to retaliate for a half-inning later against Arenado when Mets relevan Ioan Lopez hit a 94 mph fast ball near his head. Arenado started shouting at Lopez to do it again. The benches and furs cleared, and the teams pounded and pounded near the home plate.
Arenado was dumped for loading the mound, crew chief Mark Wegner said. Lopez remained in the game.
Lopez also received an undisclosed fine for his role in the incident, while two other players – Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty and Mets pitcher Taihuan Walker – were fined for joining the reserve clearing quarrel while on the injured list.
